As Marketing Manager and someone who works in the HE sector I have always actively sought to continue my own learning and I have undertaken a lot of professional development throughout my career, including CMI and CIM qualifications. To complement this I felt that a 121 relationship with a mentor would be a positive experience and balance the classroom-based learning I had undertaken with something more personal.
My mentor, a senior leadership manager from another university, has been fantastic throughout our time together and even after the programme has officially ended for us we still stay in touch. I found it especially helpful to have someone outside of my immediate working environment, but who still understood my sector, to challenge me, make me assess the direction I was taking and to inspire me to be brave in taking new paths within my career. These can be daunting decisions but I wouldn’t be where I am now without the help of my mentor.
I have greatly benefited from my time on the Yorkshire Accord programme and would recommend it to anyone who is wanting to further both their career and their own personal development. Make the most of the experience and who knows where it will take you!
